Sign Damage from February Storms

arlington sign repairCertain phrases were added to my lexicon over the past few years. Namely, Bomb Cyclone and Polar Vortex, these sounded more like battle names from any Star Wars movie of your choice than weather phenomena. As apocalyptic as the names may sound, such extreme weather conditions could cause damage to many architectural structures including signs.

I also learned that one thing thats worse than snow storms on exterior signage is wind storms. March 2018, was ushered in with a bang or should I say with a howl. Howling winds with 75 mph wind gusts hammered the Washington DC metro area, leaving the area with fallen trees, damaged roofs and and buildings. 48 hours after the storm certain areas still didn’t have power restored.

Staying Safe around Signs after Storms

Building and property managers should always inspect their buildings after a storm. Signs could easily become projectile weapons and hazards around the facility. Heavy signs like channel letters and cabinet signs must be inspected to ensure they are properly secured to the buildings. Ensure dimensional letters on monument signs are still properly fastened to the building.

Cut off the power to electrical signs, this applies to both LED and Neon if the sign has been dislodged from the wall or building. An electrician should be able to cut off the power from the breaker box and tie loose cables with a wire nut. As with any situation follow safety guidelines when dealing with damaged signs.
