Colorado fluorescent ban coming in 2025

Starting January 1, 2025, the state of Colorado will ban the sale of fluorescent light bulbs as part of section 8 of House Bill 23-1161. This significant regulation aims to phase out mercury-containing lighting in favor of more eco-friendly and energy-efficient options. This presents an opportunity for businesses to switch to LED lighting solutions that typically last longer and require less energy than conventional lighting technology. Proponents of this bill have argued that these changes will make Colorado a more environmentally-friendly state.
How does the bill affect the use of fluorescent lighting?
According to the Colorado General Assembly, the “Clean Lighting Act” will phase out the sale of general-purpose fluorescent light bulbs that contain mercury. With certain exceptions, on and after January 1, 2025, a person shall not manufacture, distribute, sell, or offer for sale in Colorado any linear fluorescent lamp or compact fluorescent lamp.
How does this affect you?
We recommend referencing House Bill 23-1161 bill to obtain full details. Essentially, when a fluorescent lamp burns out, you will not be able to replace it with a new fluorescent fixture. The only option will be to replace the burned-out lamp with an LED alternative. The State of Colorado will likely perform regular inspections to uphold this regulation and report violations.
