Upgrading a Tri-Cities Landmark: The New HAPO “Flash Cube” Display

The HAPO “Flash Cube” at Clearwater Avenue and Columbia Center Boulevard is one of Kennewick’s most recognizable sights. With its distinctive mirrored glass, it has served as a visual focal point in the Tri-Cities for years.

We have completed an LED display retrofit on the building, upgrading its exterior display technology while preserving the signature transparent look that makes the architecture so unique.

More than 15 years ago, our team installed the original exterior video mesh system on the Flash Cube. While it served HAPO Community Credit Union well for a decade and a half, LED technology has leaped forward. The old system was ready for an upgrade.

The challenge with a building like the Flash Cube is maintaining the natural light and views for the people working inside. To solve this, we used a new mesh LED system from YAHAM with a 15.625mm pixel pitch.

Because it’s a mesh system, it allows light to pass through the glass, keeping the building’s see-through design completely intact while delivering incredibly sharp, high-impact visuals to the street below.

The display is massive, measuring roughly 20 feet high by 48 feet wide and weighing in at 3,000 pounds.

To maximize its impact at one of the busiest spots in the area, we engineered the display to wrap seamlessly around a 90-degree corner of the building. This creates a multidimensional viewing experience that catches eyes from multiple directions without any awkward gaps in the playback.

“This project blends innovation with established identity,” says Jeff Young, our Chief Revenue Officer. “The Flash Cube is already one of the most recognizable structures in the region, so our goal was to install YAHAM’s updated technology in a way that amplifies its presence without compromising its unique architectural character.”

We’ve loved partnering with HAPO Credit Union over the years, and helping them keep their brand front and center on this iconic building was a significant project for our team.

As Jeremy O’Niel, HAPO’s Vice President of Marketing and Digital Experience, noted: “This upgraded display ensures the iconic HAPO ‘Flash Cube’ will continue to provide a powerful and recognizable brand presence in a highly visible location for years to come.”

With the new LED system fully operational, the Flash Cube is positioned to remain a bright, modern fixture in the Tri-Cities skyline.
