Digital Water Tower Unveiled in Downtown Peoria

City of Peoria Newsroom

Peoria, AZ (April 8, 2026) On April 7, with the flip of a switch, Mayor Jason Beck and the Peoria City Council turned on the messaging on a new digital water tower that blends Peoria’s agricultural and railroad roots with the ongoing revitalization of the Downtown area.

“This project honors Peoria’s agricultural roots with a nod to the city’s original railroad-era water tower,” said Mayor Jason Beck. “It’s a symbol of Peoria’s story and the vibrant, connected downtown we’re continuing to build.”

The idea for the digital water tower started in 2023 with the Downtown Working Group, led by Acacia Councilmember Jennifer Crawford. The group met regularly to help shape the future of downtown, while keeping Peoria’s history front and center. The Historic Preservation Commission and Arts and Culture Commission also gave input to ensure this project reflects community values and identity.

In 1889, as the Peoria town site was first surveyed, a hand-dug water well was constructed at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Washington Street. The well served local residents and travelers, becoming an essential resource for the young settlement. Five years later, the well was transformed into a water tower and tank. More than a source of water, it became a gathering place and a symbol of Peoria’s emerging civic pride.

Today, this new water tower carries that legacy forward, welcoming all who arrive, celebrating the history that shaped Peoria, while looking forward to the thriving city it is today.

Fabricated and installed by YESCO, the custom structure blends historic design with cutting-edge technology:

  • A 35-foot-tall tower inspired by railroad-era water towers
  • A 360-degree LED, measures 14.75 feet high by 13 feet in diameter, showcasing dynamic, community-focused content
  • A faux rust finish for an authentic historic look
  • Illuminated city logos visible day and night
  • Real-time content capabilities powered by 5G connectivity

The project, costing $1,370,832, will serve as a visual gateway into Downtown Peoria, creating a dynamic gathering point for residents and visitors alike. The digital display will feature videos that help promote the city’s special events, nature images that showcase the beauty of the city, with some fun and engaging elements sprinkled into the mix.

“This project brilliantly bridges Peoria’s past and future,” said Jeff Young, Executive Vice President of YESCO. “The water tower is a poignant symbol of the city’s early days, and we’re proud to help reimagine it as an illuminated landmark that celebrates community identity.”

The water tower is the latest addition to Downtown Peoria. Just across the street is Caldwell County BBQ which opened earlier this year, and Jefferson House is under construction nearby which will feature restaurants, a bar and retail/event space when it opens later this year. Also nearby, the Peoria City Hall the Front Yard just completed its makeover, offering a beautiful outdoor space that has already hosted an arts event and the city’s 50th Annual Dolly Sanchez Easter Celebration.
