Refreshing Stanford’s Iconic “Adverb Wall” 14 Years Later

Fourteen years ago, YESCO collaborated with artist Peter Wegner to build “Monument to Change as a Verb” (better known as the Adverb Wall) at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. This fall, our technicians headed back to campus to give the iconic 14-foot-by-18-foot installation a comprehensive update.

Located at the Knight Management Center, the artwork features 308 individual adverbs. Powered by a custom internal grid and a control system loaded with over 80 programmed scenes and randomized sequences, the display continuously shifts, offering students, faculty, and visitors a fresh perspective on change every time they walk by.

To preserve the integrity of the artwork and keep its dynamic lighting performing flawlessly, the YESCO team:

  • Replaced the original internal lighting with new LED systems and power supplies
  • Refreshed the vinyl on select lettering
  • Secured internal wiring to prevent shadows or light obstructions
  • Reassembled and carefully calibrated the entire display

“Returning to Stanford 14 years after we first brought Peter Wegner’s vision to life speaks to an important part of what YESCO does,” said Jeff Young, chief revenue officer. “Our role doesn’t end when an installation is complete. Maintaining and updating complex art displays ensures the original artistic intent can continue to resonate with new generations of students, faculty, and visitors.”
