Modernizing LA Union Station: 20 Million LEDs Meet Historic 1930s Architecture

Los Angeles Union Station turns 87 this year. It’s one of the busiest transit hubs on the West Coast, handling thousands of commuters every day, and until recently, its interior digital signs were showing their age.

YESCO recently wrapped up a major interior digital signage overhaul at the landmark terminal. Partnering with Metro and general contractor Abbott Construction, the team replaced aging, low-res displays with 15 custom, high-resolution LED screens across the main waiting room, concourse, and passageways.

The Specs at a Glance

  • 15 New LED Displays: Custom-built layouts ranging from compact directional signs to massive 4’2″ x 24’8″ concourse displays.
  • 20+ Million Diodes: Ultra-tight pixel pitches (down to 1.56 mm) so departure boards stay sharp whether commuters are standing right under them or walking across the hall.
  • Daily Applications: Real-time train and bus schedules, wayfinding, station updates, and local advertising.

Preserving Historic Architecture

Union Station is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, meaning display installation required extreme precision. Every screen had to fit naturally into the station’s original 1930s aesthetic without disrupting structural surfaces or original finishes.

Working alongside Morlin Asset Management, Cresa SoCal, and Selbert Perkins Design, YESCO carefully matched display placement and framing to the station’s historic layout.

“Upgrading a public landmark like Union Station comes down to respect for the original space,” says Steve Laddaga, Senior Account Executive at YESCO. “The goal was simple: give commuters clear, instantly readable information without distracting from the historic tilework and architecture.”

To handle the display hardware manufacturing, YESCO brought in SNA Displays to build the custom LED panels to meet the station’s high-visibility demands.

“These screens give commuters much sharper, faster updates while blending right into the station’s existing look,” adds Craig Sholder, Sales Director at SNA Displays.

The new LED setup makes navigating the West Coast’s busiest passenger terminal easier, clearer, and far more reliable for the millions of travelers passing through every year.
